TsAGI tests over-wing intake model of perspective engine

Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) completed the aerodynamic model testing of the air intake of prospective aviation engine of high bypass ratio.

The scientists’ challenge was to carry out exploratory tests of the over-the-wing air intake characteristics of the engine unit. The engine location over the wing is effective at noise reduction.

The experiments were held in TsAGI’s transonic wind tunnel. The Institute specialists simulated the cruise flight mode at 0.6-0.8 Mach numbers, angles of attack 0-10° and sideslip range from-5 to 5° when modeling the engine airflow.

The tests identified the air intake’s key characteristics. It allowed for the conclusion that the explored engine layout provided a satisfactory performance for the air intake on cruising modes of the operation of the aircraft.

The conducted tests became the final stage of the research work “Integrated research on the establishment of a technology demonstrator to ensure the development of subsonic civil aircraft” (code “Main line-integration”). Its objective is to perform research on testing the advanced technologies at demonstrators to introduce them to the next generation civil aircraft.
