TsAGI continues to develop the “Elephant” aircraft

Specialists of the The Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) continue to develop a prospective heavy transport aircraft “Elephant”. At the present time they have constructed the aerodynamic mockup of the prospective aircraft.
The designed mockup consists of a fuselage, wings, engine nacelles, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, landing gear spat. Its distinctive feature is the central section of the fuselage. It runs a function of a power core and the other aircraft components are fastened to this vital area. This solution will reduce the number of manufactured parts and simplify the assembly technology.
The model is designed for testing in TsAGI transonic and subsonic wind tunnels and is universal. It can be modified by changing the length and diameter of its fuselage, wing shape, axial placement, etc. The first pilot studies are planned to be held in August-September this year.
It is worth reminding that there has already been developed a technical concept of the heavy transport aircraft, as well as its basic geometry and options. The aircraft will act as a competitor to the An-124 “Ruslan”, Boeng747-8F and others. It is expected that the “Elephant” will be able to carry 150 tons of cargo over distances of up to 7000 miles at a cruising speed of 850 km/h. The practical flight range will be 4900 km with a maximum payload of 180 tons.
