Aircraft of the future: faster, lighter, quieter
8 December 2017
Supersonic passenger airliners will hit the sky in the foreseeable future, thanks to modern materials and technologies. The aircraft will be faster, lighter and quieter.
TsAGI Director General, academician Sergey Chernyshev explained to a new generation of aircraft manufacturers the direction that Russian aviation will pursue. Chernyshev described the role of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) in defining the prospective aircraft. A lecture, “New concepts of aircraft: the future begins today,” took place on December 7 at the United Aircraft Corporation among over 150 young professionals of the company.
TsAGI scientists are implementing work in various areas: a long-range. high-capacity aircraft of “flying wing” design, which has an innovative pro-composite construction; a supersonic business jet with an unrivaled comfort level; a hypersonic passenger aircraft capable of making a transatlantic flight in two hours, and many others.
“Undoubtedly, they are monumental challenges,” said Chernyshev. “At first glance they seem to be overambitious, but they are achievable goals. Our traditionally strong school of aerodynamicists, along with structural engineers, great testing experience and unique experimental facilities will help solve these tasks.”
In his report, the head of the Institute also talked about the possibilities of TsAGI’s research base and identified the research priorities in the area of security and environmental compatibility of flights.
