TsAGI Takes Part in Minsk International Heat, Mass Transfer Forum

Scientists at TsAGI (a part of NRC “Zhukovsky Institute”) reported on the 16 Minsk International Heat and Mass Transfer Forum. The event was held from May 16 to 19 in Belarus, Minsk.

The forum was opened by Oleg Penyazkov, Organizing Committee Chairman, A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He saluted the participants for the Institute’s 70th Anniversary and emphasized the importance of the Minsk Forum tightening international research-and-technology cooperation.

The Forum included plenary reports, eight sections with reports and poster presentations, round tables and lectures on different scientific topic, including convective-radiative heat transfer, heat and mass transfer in phase and chemical transformations, heat and transfer processes in nano-and microstructure systems, thermal regulation of optical and electronic systems, etc.

Georgy Dudin and Aleksandr Kuryachiy, Researchers at TsAGI’s Department for Aerothermodynamics of Hypersonic Aircraft and Aerospace Technology, reported at the Section for high-temperature heat and mass transfer, plasma systems and technologies.

A. Kuryachiy delivered a report, Controlling stability and separation of 3D boundary layer with plasma actuators, coauthored by S. Baranov, G. Gadzhimagomedov, A. Kiselev, D. Sboyev, S. Tolkachev, and S. Chernyshev. According to him, TsAGI—RAS joint research program allowed creating a multi-discharge plasma actuator to control boundary layer transition and 3D turbulent separation that emerges at high lift devices at takeoff and landing.

‘Our suggested multi-discharge plasma actuator has a simpler structure providing a much smaller size, which allows creating a volumetric force impact on thin boundary layer flow. TsAGI wind tunnel tests have shown the efficiency of the actuators for solving the applied aerodynamics tasks,’ said A. Kuryachiy.

G. Dudin presented the paper, Aerodynamic heating of thermally insulated blunt plate under strong interaction mode, coauthored by N. Batura, N. Zhurkin, and N. Kolushov. Another report was delivered by Nikolay Batura (Head of TsAGI’s R&D Department for Wind Tunnels and Test Facilities), Passive Studies of Influencing Open-Jet Mixing-Layer Characteristics, coauthored by G. Gadzhimagomedov, I. Lipatov and G. Maslennikov, at the Section for convective-radiative heat transfer.

The Minsk Forum included totally about 200 thermal physicists from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Israel and other countries. They discussed such urgent areas as thermal processes in complex electronic systems, synthesis of new materials, new aspects of boundary layer theory, complex processes in chemically reactive environments, etc.

The Minsk International Heat and Mass Transfer Forum is held once every four years. Traditionally, it is organized by National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, State Committee for Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as well as by Russian organizations including Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. During the Forum, thermal physicists share their research results and set the middle-term development goals for the area.
