The scientific laboratory headed by Vladimir Sabelnikov summed up the results of the first year of work

20 December 2017

Experts of the scientific laboratory “Research and Development of Physical Models and Numerical Technologies for Describing Combustion Regimes in Aircraft Engines,” located at the Technopark of TsAGI (a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”), summed up the results of the first year of work. Reports on the achievements of the laboratory were presented at the conference held in early December.

The event was attended by the head of the laboratory, adviser to the French national aerospace research center ONERA, Professor Vladimir Sabelnikov, and his deputies: Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Vladimir Levin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Igor Lipatov and Associate Professor Vladimir Vlasenko, as well as engineer specialists of the Aerodynamics and Aircraft Flight Dynamics Department of TsAGI.

At the beginning of the project the laboratory staff developed turbulent combustion models and created software for calculating the currents in the combustion chambers of air-jet engines. This year, an approach to turbulent combustion simulation was chosen. The technology was included in the software for numerical calculations of three-dimensional flows with combustion. The laboratory engineers carried out a large number of test calculations and examined the possibility of building a library for solving kinetics equations in the course of calculations.

The next step in the research is the validation of the developed numerical technologies, which requires a specialized experimental database on combustion in a high-speed flow. The data will be obtained in 2018–2019 using the TsAGI wind tunnel, during testing of the model combustion chamber with detailed measurements of the physical structure and flow characteristics. The design of this combustion chamber was presented at the conference, and the technologies of planned measurements were discussed.

Another area of work is associated with the investigation of the possibility of developing an engine with a resonator and continuously rotating detonation. A group of researchers led by Academician V.A. Levin developed and presented the numerical model of flow in such an engine. Three-dimensional, non-stationary calculations were performed on the Lomonosov supercomputer (MSU).

According to Vladimir Sabelnikov, the conference showed the success of the research conducted in the course of the project. In addition, during the discussion, some problems were revealed that are to be solved next year, both in the field of experiment and theoretical developments and calculations.

The laboratory “Research and Development of Physical Models and Numerical Technologies for Describing Combustion Regimes in Aircraft Engines” was opened at TsAGI’s Technopark in July, 2017. Creation of the laboratory became possible thanks to the mega-grant of the Government of the Russian Federation, won by TsAGI in 2016. One of the essential conditions for awarding the prize was the patronage of the scientific laboratory by the invited leading scientist.
