Young TsAGI specialists demonstrate their pilot projects at the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students

26 October 2017

The XIX World Festival of Youth and Students took part in October 2017 in Sochi, Russia, and an exhibition was part of the Festival. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation had its exposition at the exhibition. As a part of the exposition the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center "Zhukovsky Institute") demonstrated the scientific projects of the young scientists.

Wind tunnel training was the most exhibited among the projects, being conducted by the schoolchildren under the supervision of TsAGI members of the Youth innovation technical center. At the training wind tunnel the participants conducted tests to define aerodynamic effects and special aspects of aerodynamic flow. These projects were of great interest to the audience.

The Festival visitors had an opportunity to view two airdrones. One was a “flying laboratory” which measures pressure distribution along the wing station during actual flight, allowing the study of the physical processes of flow at small Reynolds numbers. It is used in the scientific program for the development of techniques in monitoring the pollution of surface layers in the atmosphere. The second drone demonstrated the potential of scientific, practical and educational activities of TsAGI.

In addition, TsAGI showed advances in manufacturing technology — the details of airframes treated with special vibration absorber which were created by TsAGI’s staff. These absorbers reduce the processing time of aerostructures with a significant enhancement of their quality. As young specialists noted themselves, TsAGI’s exhibits introduced the Festival participants not only to the final product of the aircraft industry, airplanes, but also to the necessary construction phases of their creation, aerodynamic experiments and production.

The XIX World Festival of Youth and Students aims to consolidate the global youth community, and to reinforce and develop international cooperation. One of the main goals of the event is to form the image of the future collectively by young people from different countries of the world, in the priority areas of development of the world economy and culture. WFYS 2017 gathered 20,000 young professionals in various fields ages 18 to 35 from over 180 countries.
