TsAGI participates in ACARE and EASA joint workshop on icing

12 October 2017

In late September, the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center "Zhukovsky Institute") participated in the workshop “In-flight icing research.” The event was organized by INCO (INternational COoperation) group of the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research (ACARE) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The workshop took place in Brussels (Belgium).

The discussion brought together experts from various areas of aviation activity: research organizations, the aircraft industry, airlines, etc. TsAGI participated as Russia’s National Contact Point (NCP)-Aeronautics, which exists to enhance scientific cooperation between Russia and the EU in the field of aeronautics. The participants exchanged experiences in issues of de-icing and discussed the instruments for development of cooperation in this area. In particular, Airbus, SAFRAN, DLR, CIRA and others offered their suggestions.

Representatives of the NCP spoke of opportunities from the Russian research institutes, members of the National Research Center “Institute named after N.E.Zhukovsky” to study icing issues. Specifically, they worked on a draft of one of the flagship EU framework topics, “Horizon 2020” — new technologies to improve the safety of flight in icing conditions. Planned studies seek to implement agreements reached by members of the Russian-European working group in the civilian sector of aviation research.

“Icing is recognized as a priority area for collaborative research based on the results of recent events held under the auspices of “Horizon 2020” and the “ACARE Council,” said Evgeny Andreev, TsAGI Head for cooperation with European countries. “Joint Russian and European projects on this subject are one of the effective ways of making progress in countering the dangerous icing phenomenon for air transport.”
