TsAGI scientists discuss issues of Aeroacoustics development with their colleagues

At the end of September the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center "Zhukovsky Institute") held an all-Russian Open Aeroacoustics Conference. The event took place with the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Perm National Research Polytechnic University. More than 40 organizations took part in the Conference, including developers of air assets, the representatives of aviation enterprises, research organizations, and institutions of higher education. The Conference was devoted to the upcoming 100th anniversary of TsAGI.
A wide range of issues was discussed at the Conference, including the latest research of aircraft noise control. Some 130 reports were presented on the subject. Scientists discussed the latest methods of noise reduction and acoustic measurements, computational aeroacoustics, problems of radiating sound turbulence structure, etc.
The participants reviewed recent decisions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to tighten the noise requirements for civilian platforms, entering into effect December 31, 2017, and for aircraft up to 55 tons on December 31, 2020. A discussion ensued about the new challenges arising from these innovations, since no Russian passenger airliner meets these standards.
The ICAO approach to reduce aircraft noise was the key topic of the plenary report of Victor Kopyev, the Head of Aeroacoustics and Aviation Ecology Division of TsAGI. In his address he said: “The next tightening of ICAO standards will follow soon, and we are pressed for time for our aircraft to measure up to the standards.” He further stressed that without a modern experimental base, including large-scale installations and flying laboratories, we would not be able to develop new solutions and bring the aircraft environmental parameters up to the more stringent standards. “This means immediate implementation of the project for an acoustic wind tunnel with a hot air flow, and the preparation of a new acoustic camera in a large TsAGI subsonic wind tunnel. This project won a grant from the Government of the Moscow region,” Viktor Kopyev further explained. [TsAGI will post the Conference’s decisions along with the progress report on the TsAGI website.]
TsAGI specialists presented more than 50 reports at the Conference. They presented the results of the joint work with colleagues from Irkut Corporation, SCAC, UEC-AVIADVIGATEL, CIAM, MIPT, MAI, Aeroflot and others, as well as achievements in scientific cooperation with foreign partners, including Queen Mary University of London.
The event continued the tradition of conferences on aviation acoustics sponsored by TsAGI since 1962, being in fact the 17th Conference on Aeroacoustics. The conference brings together researchers, engineers and leading practitioners in the field of aeroacoustics and aeroecology, and provides an opportunity for open discussion of the achievements and future directions in research.
