TsAGI scientists win “Aircraft builder of the year" awards
22 September 2017
The award’s ceremony of the contest “Aircraft builder of the year” took place on September 21. Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center" Institute named after N.E.Zhukovsky") were invited to the ceremony.
Certificates were received by Aleksander Chevagin, Deputy Head of Scientific-Research Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics Complex and the Head of the Aircraft Propulsion systems research Department of TsAGI, and Michail Golovkin, Chief Researcher of the Department of aerodynamics and dynamics of helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft aerodynamics and high angles of attack. TsAGI’s Director General, Academician Sergey Chernyshev took part in the ceremony.
The study under the guidance of Michael Golovkin, “Development of a new generation of rotor for prospective helicopter,” joined the winners of the nomination “Best innovative project.” Scientists of TsAGI created rotor blades with 5th generation helicopter aerodynamic profiles using special end tips, extensions and twists. The proposed aerodynamic configuration of rotor blades, improved in terms of efficiency, aerodynamic quality and noise, confirmed their efficiency in flight tests on a flying laboratory.
The project “The technology of testing the engine reversal thrust for advanced mainline aircraft,” led by Alexander Chevagin, won in the category “For the creation of a new technology.” The result was the unique technology of testing model aircraft with engines in a reverse thrust mode in a full-scale wind tunnel. The resulting bench-test base and a methodology of computer modeling allowed scientists to define the complex characteristics of stability and controllability of the aircraft and its powerplant, including cases of engine systems and modeling control failure simulations when landing on a runway. The technology is used for the newest domestic aircraft SSJ100 and MC-21 to ensure flight safety.
The annual competition “Aircraft builder of the year” was held for the sixth time. Its founders are the Union of Aviation Industrialists of Russia, the “United Aircraft Corporation,” the “United Engine Corporation,” “Russian Helicopters,” JSC “Tehnodinamika” and TsAGI. The jury determines the winners in ten nominations, and the awards ceremony is attended by representatives of the Federal Government, as well as more than 100 aviation companies in the country. About 120 projects were submitted for the contest this year.
