TsAGI hosts IFAR young specialist Workshop

21 July 2017

During MAKS-2017 the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center" Institute named after N.E.Zhukovsky“) organized a workshop for young scientists who are members of IFAR. The event was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and the International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudichestvo) in the framework of the “New Generation” program.

The meeting brought together young professionals from TsAGI and their colleagues from the research centers of DLR (Germany), ONERA (France), VKI (Belgium), CIRA (Italy), INTENDED (Romania), CEiiA (Portugal), CAE (China), CSIR (SOUTH AFRICA), JAXA (Japan), and KARI (South Korea). They were joined by students — graduates of the educational centre “Sirius” — and recipients of grants of the President of the Russian Federation.

On the first day, the participants gathered at the site of the Eurasian Aerospace Congress (EAC 2017), where they took part in the plenary meeting of the EAC and held two round tables during the workshop. Young professionals discussed the development of aviation systems, climate and environment impact on aviation, as well as the role of energy resources. The participants held a discussion on the professional development of young scientists and engineers and changing requirements for Aerospace education.

The moderators of the round tables were TsAGI Director General, Academician Sergey Chernyshev and leading European experts: Professor Joachim Szodruch, the honorary chairman of IFAR and Dr. Georges Bridel, former Vice President of the Airbus Advanced Design and Technology Department. The special guest of the round table, “New generation: world aviation of the XXI century through the eyes of IFAR young scientists,” was Dr. Sebastiano Fumero, Head of the Unit “Aviation” of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission. Special guest Academician Mikhail Pogosyan, Rector of Moscow Aviation Institute took part in the round table “Education of the future” where he spoke about the current educational programs in Russian universities and new initiatives in the training of future staff for the aviation industry.

The second day of the seminar was organized in the format of a “Knowledge Café” (IFAR ECN Café). The participants of the meeting shared experiences of their research with each other, discussed the world’s best project management practices in an interactive format, presented their vision of the trends in the aerospace market developments, and suggested ideas for joint international projects.

“The IFAR Forum, in which our Institute represents the interests of Russian Aviation science, traditionally devotes itself to youth initiatives,” said Sergey Chernyshev. “This fully accords with the interests of TsAGI, paying considerable attention to the education of a new generation of professionals. The workshop for young scientists is a significant contribution to the bank for the development of professionals, whose activities tomorrow will determine the future of world aeronautics.”

IFAR (International Forum for Aviation Research) is the only worldwide association of State aviation research organizations from around the world. The Forum is aimed at the development of communications and the development of a common understanding among participants of the challenges facing the global aerospace community. IFAR members represent 26 centers from around the world. TsAGI represents the Russian Federation at IFAR.
