On August 1, the fin torsion box of the MS-21-300 aircraft was delivered to the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after professor N.E. Zhukovsky (part of the National Research Center ‘Institute named after N.E.Zhukovsky‘) for endurance testing. The torsion box parts made of polymer composite materials were manufactured by JSC ORPE Technologiya. The assembly was done at JSC Aviastar-SP. The endurance testing of the fin torsion box is to commence at the end of August.

Before the tests started, the fin torsion box unit undergos ultrasonic testing. After this the unit will be subjected to non-visible impact damages and cyclic loading to an extent far exceeding the design service life. The next step is to expose the fin torsion box to low-detectable and detectable standard damages that are to be restored partially as per the approved procedure. Then, the unit will undergo cyclic loading equivalent to 60,000 flights and checked for adequate level of residual structural strength. The final step of the testing will include applying maximum loads to the damaged and partially restored torsion box up to its complete failure.

The aim of the testing is to verify the fin torsion box design service life of 60,000 flights.
