IFASD 2015: Results of the third day

The third and final day of IFASD-2015, the 16th International Forum on Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics, has drawn to a close. The TsAGI press office has provided some highlights of key events at the forum.
The day began with some breakout sessions. TsAGI experts presented papers on aeroelasticity in aircraft design and the optimization of aircraft structures, ground frequency and flight testing, aeroservoelasticity and active control, structural dynamics and shimmy (self-sustained landing gear oscillation).
“Previously, Russian scientists did not deliver so many reports at IFASD. It is nice to see that their work is arousing genuine interest among the audience, and generating scientific discussions. Another positive point is the high level of activity of young professionals, including as speakers. Most of them have shown a professional approach in presenting their material,” the moderator of the session dedicated to the aeroelasticity optimization of aircraft structures, Head of the TsAGI Aircraft Strength Complex Department Vasiliy Chedrik, said.
The results of IFASD 2015 were analyzed at a meeting of the Programme Committee. The Chairman of the Programme Committee, a leading researcher in the TsAGI Aircraft Strength Complex Svetlana Kuzmina commented on the meeting: “We have summed up the work of 25 sessions. We can say for certain that the key objective of the forum, which was to bring together the achievements of scientists from various countries specializing in aeroelasticity and structural dynamics, has been successfully achieved”.
At the same meeting it was decided that Italy would host the next forum. Sergio Ricci, a member of the Programme Committee and Professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan said: “There are many scientific conferences on a wide range of issues that attract a huge number of participants. It’s easy to ‘get lost’ among all these events. IFASD has the advantage of being a highly specialized meeting of scientists, so the discussion takes place between peers in a low-key environment”.
The forum concluded with a plenary report from a member of the Programme Committee, Bristol University (UK) Professor Jonathan Cooper, who spoke about how aeroelasticity and structural dynamics can influence future aircraft designs.
At the closing ceremony, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of IFASD 2015, TsAGI Deputy General Director and Head of the Aircraft Strength Complex Mikhail Zichenkov expressed his gratitude to everyone for their fruitful work.
At the end of the forum, Programme Committee member and Director of the Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics Department at ONERA (France) Jean-Pierre Grisval shared his impressions of the forum: “The event will be best remembered for its high level of scientific activity and warm atmosphere in the best traditions of Russian hospitality”.
Organizing Committee member and Head of TsAGI Strength Standards, Loads and Aeroelasticity Department Sergey Parishev commented on the results of IFASD 2015: “Almost a quarter of the reports presented at the forum were delivered by Russian scientists. Due to the fact that domestic and foreign aeroelasticity schools have been evolving independently of each other for a long time, it is especially important to ‘compare notes’ regularly, and to exchange experience and knowledge. I think that this meeting has provided all the participants an excellent opportunity to do this”.
IFASD provides a comprehensive survey of the current status of research and development in the fields of Aerospace Vehicle Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics, Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization, and Active and Adaptive Structures. During the forum, representatives of scientific organizations, aviation industry enterprises, and universities have the opportunity to share knowledge, experience and discuss promising areas of research. This year IFASD is organized by FSUE TSAGI.
