IFASD 2015: Results of the first day

The first day of IFASD-2015, the 16th International Forum on Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics, has finished. The TsAGI press office has provided some highlights of key events at the forum.
The forum began with a plenary report from TsAGI Acting General Director Professor Sergey Chernyshev. He spoke about a systemic approach in aeroelasticity research and its role in aircraft design. “TsAGI is the development center of the Russian aeroelasticity research school. Many years of work in this field by the institute has resulted in the creation of a systemic methodology. This ensures the most comprehensive review possible of all the aeroelasticity requirements in the development of a modern aircraft,” the TsAGI Director said. Sergey Chernyshev presented the main features of the methodology used to the international audience, and stressed that it “features a high share of experimental studies.”
The second plenary report was made by the member of Programme Committee Ph.D. David M. Schuster, NASA Technical Fellow for Aerosciences, Langley Research Center. He spoke about recent progress in prediction of buffet and aeroacoustic environments at NASA.
During the breakout sessions, TsAGI experts presented the results of research in the field of experimental methods, loads and aeroservoelasticity (interaction of management systems with elastic structures).
The busy program of the first working day concluded with poster presentations made by researchers. These materials will be available to visitors throughout the forum.
Commenting on the results of the day, TsAGI Acting General Director Professor Sergey Chernyshev said: “The organization of IFASD 2015 in Russia demonstrates the important role of national science to the global research community. In many respects this is due to the activities of our institute, which is actively involved in international projects. TsAGI experts are continuously improving their skills, which is evident from the reports presented at the forum.”
Chairman of the Organizing Committee of IFASD 2015, TsAGI Deputy General Director and Head of the Aircraft Strength Complex Mikhail Zichenkov also shared his opinion: “The fact that a well-known global event, such as IFASD, is taking place in our country is very important for Russian specialists. We are confident that this meeting will help analyze the present and the future of aviation science in the field of aeroelasticity and structural dynamics, as well as predict future trends and developments in this area. ”
IFASD provides a comprehensive survey of the current status of research and development in the fields of Aerospace Vehicle Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics, Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization, and Active and Adaptive Structures. During the forum, representatives of scientific organizations, aviation industry enterprises, and universities have the opportunity to share knowledge, experience and discuss promising areas of research. This year IFASD is organized by FSUE TSAGI.
