TsAGI is working to expand experimental facilities

New aerodynamic testing units, currently being developed by experts at FSUE TsAGI, will soon be installed in the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after Prof. N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI).
“The task to create new wind tunnels was set by the government in 2010. Today, scientists and designers of our Institute have determined the appearance and main technical parameters of these systems and their components,” said Yuri Kartashov, advisor to Director General of TsAGI on prospective experimental facility development projects.
The seasonal cryogenic wind tunnel will be put into trial operation in 2015, designed for the study of complex physical processes associated with aircraft icing.
“We expect that this facility will be in great demand not only by TsAGI scientists, but by other aviation industry enterprises,” explained Nikolay Batura, head of the department of research and design of wind tunnels and test benches at TsAGI. “The new cryogenic wind tunnel will allow us to conduct research and development of anti-icing systems on parts of actual aircraft structures at relatively low costs.”
One of the major projects, employing significant efforts of engineers of the Russian aviation science center, is the creation of a new hypersonic system. It consists of three units with a common power system and automated process control system. This is a large hypersonic wind tunnel designed for experiments with full-scale models (or large-scale models) of hypersonic aircraft, including a configuration with operating engines. Also, the system will include a shock tube allowing researchers to promptly resolve aerothermodynamics issues arising at various stages of development of hypersonic aircraft, as well as a special-purpose aerodynamic unit for testing thermal protection systems.
Another important step in the design of new experimental facilities of the Institute is the creation of an aeroacoustic tunnel. This unit will allow research aimed at ensuring compliance of modern aircraft with environmental noise level requirements.
In terms of technical capabilities the new units in general have no domestic counterparts and will significantly expand experimental capabilities of the aerospace industry.
Along with the development of new facilities, TsAGI experts are working on the improvement of its existing units to significantly expand their experimental capabilities after modernization. This effort will impact well-known industrial wind tunnels of the Institute.
